How to Choose Wall Lights for Your Home
The right wall light starts with a job to do: illuminate a book, add a softer layer to a living room, highlight artwork or light an entrance. A fitting that looks attractive in a photograph still needs the right dimensions, light direction and installation position for your room.
This guide explains what to compare before you browse our wall lights.
Choose the purpose before the style
| Where the light will go | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Beside a bed | Reading direction, switch access, projection and comfort when lying down. |
| Living room or hallway | The effect on the wall, the fitting's scale and clearance beside furniture or circulation routes. |
| Above artwork | Width, reach and reflections from the normal viewing position. |
| Exterior wall | The selected fitting's IP rating, exposure and mounting details. |
Measure more than the height
Record the fitting's width, height and projection from the wall. Projection is easy to overlook: a deep shade can intrude into a narrow passage or sit too close to a headboard. Mark the outline on the wall with removable tape before choosing a larger decorative design.
Also check the mounting plate and power entry. A decorative body may not cover an existing electrical box in the way you expect. Your installer should confirm the fixing position before the wall finish is completed.
Compare the light source
Some wall lights use a replaceable bulb; others have an integrated LED source. Check the bulb holder or LED details, whether the light is included and whether the fitting supports the dimming system you want. A decorative shade is not enough information to establish reading performance.
Two different decorative approaches

For a vertical glass composition, compare LUMEN COLUMN - B. Its appearance and light distribution differ from a shaded wall lamp, so choose according to the effect you want rather than matching the finish alone.
Coordinate the room without matching every fitting
Start with one repeated element, such as a warm metal finish or a curved form. The wall lights can complement a chandelier without copying it. Compare modern wall lights, antique wall lights and abstract designs against the actual furniture and wall colour.
Questions to settle before ordering
- Will the light be used for reading, atmosphere or highlighting a feature?
- Do the width and projection fit the available space?
- Can you reach the switch comfortably?
- Are the bulb, driver and dimming requirements confirmed?
- Does an exterior or damp location need a differently rated fitting?
For exterior positions, browse outdoor wall lights and verify each model's suitability. For a covered or open balcony, read what to check before using a wall light outdoors. For a bedroom, read our bedside wall-light placement guide.
