Table Lamp or Floor Lamp: Which Is Better for Reading?
Choose the lamp around your chair, available space and the direction of light. A table lamp works when you have a suitable surface beside you; a floor lamp can work when there is space for a stable base near the seat. Either type needs to light the page comfortably.
When a table lamp makes sense
Choose a table lamp if a bedside or side table can support it securely while leaving room for the things you use. Check the combined table and lamp height from your normal seated position.
The shade opening and light source should suit where you hold a book. An attractive lamp placed behind your head may leave the page in shadow.
When to consider a floor lamp
A floor lamp can avoid using table space, but check its base footprint and shade reach. Position it so the base and cable stay clear of the route around the chair.
If the head or arm adjusts, confirm its range and whether it holds the required position. A fixed decorative floor lamp may mainly provide atmosphere, so check the individual fitting's light direction.
Four checks before buying
- Useful light: compare specified light output in lumens, alongside the shade and beam direction.
- Comfort: check for a bright exposed source in your eyes and reflections on the page.
- Control: make sure the switch is easy to reach while seated.
- Compatibility: confirm the permitted bulb, whether it is included, and dimming compatibility if needed.
A demonstration in a similar seated position can help you compare options. The height of your chair and nearby furniture matters more than the lamp category alone.
