How High Should Bedside Wall Lights Be? A Placement Guide

There is no single bedside wall-light height that suits every bed and fitting. A comfortable position depends on the mattress height, how you sit to read, the shade or beam direction, and where you can reach the switch. Measure those first, then set the electrical point to suit the chosen light.

Start with the bed in its final position

Use the finished mattress height, including any topper. Record the headboard's width and height, the bedside-table height and the centre of each sleeping position. A wall point marked before the furniture is selected may end up hidden behind a headboard or too far from the person using it.

Use your reading position to find the light opening

Sit on the bed in your usual reading position. Ask someone to hold a paper outline of the proposed fitting beside you. Check where the light will leave the shade or reflector, not just where the mounting plate will sit.

The opening should not expose an uncomfortable bright source to your eyes when sitting or lying down. For reading, check that the light can reach the page without your head or shoulder blocking it. A decorative ambient fitting may need a separate reading light.

Convert the desired light position into a fixing position

The mounting plate and light opening are not always at the same height. A tall vertical wall light can put the shade well above its fixing point; another design can put it below. Once you have selected the model, use its actual drawing to locate the electrical point.

Measure on site Why it matters
Floor to top of mattress Gives the real starting height for the person using the bed.
Normal seated eye position Helps check glare and the view of the light source.
Fitting height and projection Checks the space beside the headboard and pillow.
Mounting plate to shade or light opening Converts a comfortable light position into the correct fixing position.
Switch position and reach Checks everyday operation from the bed.

The ALPHYRA wall light illustrates why the shade and the decorative body should both be considered when planning the mounting position.

Wall light, pendant or table lamp?

Bedside wall lights can keep the table surface free while fixing the light position to the wall. Bedside pendants also free the surface but need a suitable ceiling point and a checked hanging length. Table lamps offer another arrangement where the furniture has enough usable area and a suitable socket position.

For pendants, check that the shade is clear of your head when getting into bed and does not obstruct items on the table. For a table lamp, check the stability and footprint of the base rather than choosing by height alone.

Check controls and the light source

Decide whether each side should work independently and where the controls will sit. Confirm the bulb or integrated LED specification and any dimming compatibility before ordering. These details vary by product; a particular shade style does not guarantee a particular reading effect.

Before the electrician finalises the points

  • Confirm the bed and furniture positions.
  • Check the fitting drawing and mounting plate.
  • Test the outline from sitting, lying and standing positions.
  • Confirm the switch position and wiring arrangement.
  • Record the agreed measurements from the finished floor.
